The publication gives a comprehensive overview of the development of the alpine arc.

This dissertation gives an excellent overview of the structural change of agriculture in Switzerland during the last decades of the 20th century. It also contains a fine description of agricultural research methods.

BÖSCH, M. (2007): DIAMONT 1 - Analysing the influence of cultural differences on regional development in the Alps. European Academy Bozen-Bolzano, Arbeitsheft/Quaderno 47, Bozen.
The author analyses the question whether cultural differences cause different types of developments within the Alps. Thus, the book provides background information and inputs for thoughts on the discussion of sustainability in the Alps.

BRIQUEL, V. (2007): DIAMONT 2 - Analysis of Experts’ Assessments of Alpine Development. European Academy Bozen-Bolzano, Arbeitsheft/Quaderno 48, Bozen.
The author illustrates the main developments and their effects on sustainable development in the Alps. His analysis is based on interviews with 60 experts within the Alps. From that, he draws conclusions on where and how critical future developments are to be expected in the Alpine arc.

BROGGI, M., Kusstatscher, K. & Sutter, R. (1997): Ökologisch motivierte Direktzahlungen in der Berglandwirtschaft des Alpenbogens. Europäische Akademie Bozen. Blackwell Wissenschaft Berlin-Wien, 223 S.
This book, although published some years ago, gives a fine overview of the characteristics of the different agricultural direct payments. It is worth mentioning that the described strategic approach for a development towards a sustainable mountain agriculture is site specific.

On the basis of scientific facts, the project demonstrates the need for action and the social relevance of alpine agriculture. The publication describes strategies and options for the Austrian alpine pastures and their cultivation. It therefore provides a basis for future decisions in agricultural policy.

PFEFFERKORN, W., EGLI, H.-R. & MASSARUTTO, A. (Eds.) (2005): Regional Development and Cultural Landscape Change in the Alps – The challenge of Polarisation. Geographica Bernensia G74, University of Bern, Institute of Geography, Liebefeld.
The book is based on the results of the research project REGALP (5th EU- Framework Research Programme, Contact No QLK5-CT-2001-02329). It describes the general spatial development of the Alpine arc, thereby dealing with different topics from agriculture through accessibility to demographic development.

This dissertation shows the development patterns of mountain agriculture under various general conditions by the example of two regions of Mittelbünden. A model simulates how these changes affect the land use.

This publication, which was published on the new research platform of the University of Innsbruck, illuminates different topics with alpine relevance (water, climate change, mountain agriculture, etc). It focuses in particular on Austria. Another focal point lies on future perspectives for society, spatial planning and economy.

This is the first time a publication analyses the extent and effects of the Brain Drain in the Swiss mountain areas. The book contains a French and an Italian summary. Also available online: www.sab.ch.

The authors provide an insight into the changing landscape and biodiversity of the Swiss Alps and their influencing variables. Different scenarios show what the future may look like. In addition, management options and recommendations for action were elaborated.
