Yet another classic in the field of participation. The processes and results of public participation can be planned on the one hand - on the other hand, the outcomes are time and again surprising. The practical and research experiences from the Austrian project Transparent were the reason to write a "travel guide" on this topic. The book deals with several aspects of public participation and presents various forms of participation. It is aimed at those who would like to increase public participation within their professional field.

This excellent book summarises main findings of the Swiss national research project NRP 48 "Landscapes and Habitats of the Alps". It explains how it is possible to develop landscapes and habitats in the Alps by including all important actoras and stakeholders. The book focuses specifically on steerig instruments and the potential and limitations of participatory methods. It shows by means of various examples how public participation can work, and summarises more than a dozen of research project of the NRP 48 and presented within a comprehensive framework. Those projects have scientifically researched the importence of participation, tested its importance inpractice and presented its fields of application.
